English to French OS?
Posted by Pico Rivera on August 28th, 2003

Hi.

I have a number of machines with WIN2K and XP-PRO, in English. I have been
asked to convert about half of them to French versions of the same OS.

Does anyone know if there's a way I can reinstall the French version over an
existing English installation, so that it functions properly and I don't
have to reinstall all the programmes (I realize the programmes will still be
in their installed language)?

Thanks for any help.

Chris

Sorry, but reformat and a clean install of the French version is the only
way you can do it.

Hi

Not possible, I'm afraid. You need to do a fresh install.

Hi Pico,

You may want to check out W2K MUI (multi-user interface).

With MUI you can change system interface strings from one language to
another at run time. As far as I understand, the MUI part comes on a
separate installation CD which is only sold bundled with the W2K CD. (I've
seen adverts offering W2K+SP3+MUI at $420.) I imagine that you first install
W2K and then install MUI on top. It may be that this has to be done before
installing other software, in which case it is no good for you, but if not
then it means that you could buy the bundle just to get the MUI CD and
install this on top of an existing W2K installation.

I'm sure that somebody in this group can confirm whether or not this is
possible. If not, you you should check the MS web site.

The MUI localization is not 100%, but 95ish%.

Think about it. What language do you think the registry will be in if you
install a French OS over the English?

Not even 95%. Windows XP is about 90% so I hear. Windows 2000 is about
60 - 40 to the good. Remember the registry is still in English.

According to the MS website, the localization with MUI "is about 90%".
