installing SP4
Posted by jabs on February 29th, 2004

Hi All,

where can I find info about an installation of SP4 that keeps aborting? I
checked the MS web site and couldn't find any trouble-shooting.

Basically, the error says that a connection to the server can't be found. I
downloaded the patch to execute locally and it said the same thing.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi jabs,

If you want to run it locally download the "Network Installation".This
will download over 100MB of the Service Pack. The other download, the
"Express Installation" is much, much smaller, and tries to compare
your system with what's in the Servcie Pack and only download those
bits that you need.

When you said that you downloaded it, did you download the full thing
or just the Express package?

Cheers,

Cliff

From personal experience and reports from numerous
sources, DON'T install SP4 unless you absolutely must !!!
Do a Google search to find the reasons why or go to the MS
Knowledge-less-base and read all the problems that happen
when you do install SP4... yeah, there are exceptions and
you might win the Big Lotto Jackpot too !

MS should be hung by their Balls !

There was an error again - "Server name or address could not be resolved".
Since I'm not using 2k Server, it wouldn't be trying to resolve my address,
and since it's a local download, what server would it be trying.....Anyway,
I'm going to try the Full version next, unless there is something else I can
do.

I appreciate your concern and agree that MS's hegemony on the desktop market
has allowed them to become sloppy in a lot of ways. But since I'm in the MS
boat (b/c of work, like everyone else) I'm going to paddle. I'm doing this
on my home PC and the configuration is too terribly complicated, so I expect
it to work (eventually). Stayed tuned to see if i get screwed!

Can I download and execute the file from a disk that is not root? (I only
have 466mb on the system disk, but plenty of room in a separate logical

I agree sp4 often causes problems. If the system is working fine, leave
it alone.

Hi

And this was said about SP3 and SP2 and <fill in any service pack to
any MS OS here> as well. By listening to all those advises you would
end up not installing any service pack ever ;-)

For most computers, a SP install will go well, but of course, some
computers will get into trouble.

We have installed SP4 on thousands on computers, and only a few
had issues afterwards.

Hi

Thank you for posting here.

The issue may occur if you try to install Windows 2000 SP4 on a computer
where the Hummingbird NFS Maestro Client program is installed.

- You receive the first error message described in the "Symptoms"
section when you install the NFS Maestro Client program on a Windows
2000-based computer and then try to install Windows 2000 SP4.
- You receive the second error message described in the "Symptoms"
section when you install the NFS Maestro Client program on a Windows
2000-based computer, install Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2), install
Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3), and then try to install Windows 2000
SP4.

To work around this issue, remove the NFS Maestro Client
program before you install Windows 2000 SP4. When the computer has been
successfully updated to Windows 2000 SP4, reinstall the NFS Maestro
Client
program.

If the issue still exists, please capture a screen shot of the error so
that I can understand the issue clearly.

To capture a screen shot, please follow the steps below:

Step 1: When the error message appears, press the Pr Scrn key located at
the
top-right corner of the keyboard to capture a screen shot.

Step 2: Click Start, select Run, type MSPAINT in the Open box, and then
click OK.

Step 3: Use Ctrl + V to paste the screen shot to the canvas. When we are
prompted
to enlarge the bitmap, press Y or Enter.

Step 4: Click the File (or press Alt+ F) menu and select Save.

Step 5: Select Desktop in the 'Save in' box and type 'screen' in the File
name
box.

Step 6: Select JPEG in the Save as type box and click OK.

The screen shot is located on the Desktop and named screen.jpg. Please
attach it with your reply.

Hope this helps!

Sincerely,

Hi all,

I've tried everything suggested so far but still no message. Thanks for
trying tho!

Rather than a screenshot (which is a very generic message), I searched the
log of the update. This is what I came up with.

There were 2 log files: svcpack.log and Windows Update.log. The svcpack.log
said this (snipped):

*******svcpack.log******************
Starting process: msiinst.exe /delayrebootq
***

Working directory: D:\WINNT\System32\msiinst.tmp
***

Return Code = 2
***

DoInstallation:RunInfProcesses Failed

has occurred.
***

VerifySize: Unable to verify size: Source = NULL: d:\winnt\oem24.cat

***

***

Message displayed to the user: An error in updating your system has
occurred.
***

***
*******END svcpack.log END******************

The Windows.log file had this to say:

Hi

Thanks for the detailed answers!

Based on the error message, I suggest you reinstall Windows Installer 2.0
Redistributable for Windows NT 4.0 and 2000 and try again.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...&FamilyID=4B61
40F9-2D36-4977-8FA1-6F8A0F5DCA8F

If you could not install the Windows installer, please start into safe mode
and deleted the following files: msi.dll, msiexec.exe, mshnd.dll from the
sytem32 and dllcache folder. Then, reboot and reran instmsiw.exe to install
MSI Installer 2.0

To start in Safe Mode, please refer to the following steps.

1. Restart your computer, and when the Boot menu appears, press F8.

2. When the "Windows Advanced Options" menu appears, select an option,
and then press ENTER.

3. When the Boot menu appears again, with the words "Safe Mode"
displayed in red at the bottom, select the installation you want to
start, and then press ENTER.

Let me know how this works out!

Sincerely,
Jack Wang, MCSE 2000, MCSA, MCDBA, MCSD
