If you are going to tell me that you can't go from XP to 2000, stop ready.
This is for those talented few who want to do what they say can't be done.
I've heard it all before. I've reverted XP to 2000 before but it was a
sloppy job that could be done better. I'm looking for experts who know how
to do it right

I have a laptop that comes set up with all kinds of corporate software on XP
pro. I have set up a dual boot and copied the XP pro partition to the new
partition.

Now I want to convert (upgrade/migrate??) the new partition so it runs 2000
pro. The goal is of course to get most of the corporate stuff running on
2000 pro.

Any ideas?

Performing a supported migration means that you let

the fruits if his labour.

I thought the blatantly obvious was obvious enough. I don't have the
original software and it will be a much longer learning curve to get them,
install them and configure them

Just one. If the laptop is your company's and not yours, buy
your own and don't screw theirs up.

Please give us ten good reasons why anyone should tackle
this issue for you. It requires a lot of work, its outcome is
uncertain (putting it mildly), it is way outside the design
parameters for Win2000, there is no benefit for anyone
other than for yourself, and it is an exercise in futility since
you will need the original software anyway at some later
stage, when a reload becomes necessary.

Over to you: Convice us that this is a job worth doing!

Hmmm... I'm not sure exactly what Setup is looking for to determine the
version of the installed OS. In the Win9x days it was win.com in the
windows directory but that doesn't exist in NT systems.

I like to try simple things first, I'd try renaming the Windows directory.

The NT boot files in the root directory would be next thing I'd futz
with, ntldr, ntdetect.com. boot.ini, maybe replace them with 2K
versions, or rename them.

There is no "rollback" to Win2K.

To replace WinXP with an earlier OS, you'll have to boot from the
appropriate boot disk, format the hard drive, and install. There is
no supported downgrade path or technique.

Simply boot from the Win2K installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and/or format the system partition as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

The files you refer to are boot files and apply to the entire system. In a
multiboot system with 98, 2k and XP, you need the XP version of NTLDR and
NTDETECT.COM to boot all 3. Revert back to the 2K versions and only 98 and
2K will boot

thinking that the XP install is really 2000.

Or take the hard drive out of the case and hit it with a sledge hammer
untill bits fall off. Reinstall the hard disk and reboot from the win
2000 CD. After the repair stops running, the machine will reboot and
you will have downgraded to Windows 1999.
