- Multiple monitors
- Posted by Sherry on November 21st, 2003
I have a laptop with a docking station so only one video card. This web apge
makes it sound like I only need 1 video card to use mltiple monitors. Is
that true? Or is that only with certain versions of Windows. When I go to
Control Panel/Display/Settings I don't see the second monitor described in
step 2.
I want to do this at work with my docking station. Part 2 of this same
question is can I do this on my home desktop PC with only one video card and
a splitter cable?

There are some video cards with multiple outputs. That's the only way you
can get away with having only one video card but multiple displays.
www.matrox.com makes many different multi-head cards, for example.

Some laptops may allow for a multi-monitor setup using the built-in LCD
screen and an external monitor connected to the VGA port, but it will be
totally dependent on the individual manufacturer and the hardware used.
Ray is correct concerning the desktop computer. You will need a "dual port"
video card, or two video cards to run two monitors in multi-monitor mode.

I have a HP Evo N620c. How can I find out if this model will work like that?
I emailed HP and got no response. I don't want to buy another monitor to
find out this own't work for me.
Thanks

Look on the back of the computer where the monitor cable is plugged in. Is
there a second connection for a second monitor?

Dont forget the option of multiple display cards. I have used dual head AGP,
AGP and PCI, and 2 PCI cards to get the same effect... infact.. I have had
as many as 4 displays running off a single machine...
I run a Dell Latitude C640 at work. In the dock, I have a 19" monitor, and
the ATI 7500 Mobile chipset that this unit has allows me to use the LCD on
the laptop and the 19" at the same time. So, I use a dualhead system at
work, and many of the other folks have started to do the same. Its pretty
awsome.
And, i do like the Matrox offerings. Been using G400's for years, and
looking at the new P650 and P750 lines...

I looked at the online documentation for your computer, but it does not
specifically say whether it will support multi-monitor using the built-in
LCD screen and an external monitor. It does reference a "Documentation
Library" CD that should have come with the computer. If you have the CD, you
might look at it for the information. Otherwise, you may have to contact
Hewlett Packard for the answer.
