- No USB on W2k when stepping back from XP
- Posted by TecHeadTOH on March 5th, 2004
Greetings
We have a perplexing issue in dealing with USB for Win2k on our IBM ThinkCenters. Shipped with XP the front USB Pair do not function while the back do, just fine. After installing W2k SP4, we applied IBM's Qi3z09us.exe and the USB 2.0 driver install after the BIOS flash that was done by a service rep. After multiple fresh installs, configurations, and differant patch/fix attempts there is still no USB device recognition in W2k with all drivers indicating they are operating correctly
Microsoft Knowledgebase article 822568 indicated a similar fix for USB 2.0 functionality. There has been no Device Driver Warning to warrent this fix, but we attempted it just the same
USB devices will function only if attached before PC Startup with NO active USB Plug and Play recognition inside windows. Is this a USB hardware limitation in W2k or a Software Function only avilable in XP? Has anyone else experienced difficulties in backstepping to W2k from XP re: USB
Your input is appreciated

Hello
Being that you ordered these systems from IBM have
you asked IBM about your pending issue with the front
USB ports. Also you mention that the pc's came with XP
and you installed Win2000, Prior to installing Win2000
have you tried using XP on 1 of the pc to see if the USB
ports do work under XP

Well he can forget getting help from IBM.. seeing as how he voided the
warrenty by altering the system....

He didn't void the warranty. They'll still support the hardware, which
means that they'd have him run a DOS based diagnostics program. And, if
he were to reinstall WinXP they'll still support the software, too.
Ross, you may want to verify that you have the latest chipset drivers.
I've seen a similar issue on Dell systems before, where we have to
un/reinstall the chipset to get the front ports to work in W2K. And,
you may also try W2K w/ SP3. Something they did in SP4 altered the way
2K works with USB. HTH.
