- prc service is not starting

the rpc service on my win2k machine is hung on the
starting status. I have tried rebooting, etc. This
service does not let you stop or pause it. Is there any
way I can get this service to start again - other than
reinstalling the OS? Oh yes, I also checked for viruses -
none.
