regedit and task manager closing unexpectedly
Posted by christophe on March 6th, 2004

Hi,

One of the machine in my company is doing strange things:

When you try to open regedit or task manager, the window appear for 2 or 3
seconds then the application is closing.

regedt32 is working well.

Does anybody know something about this?

Virus maybe?

I scanned my machine and rebooted without success.

Thanks for any help.

Yes it sure is !

You scanned your PC ???
With what ? Are you up-to-date with signatures ?

I think you need a second and/or third opinion...

Please go to one or more of the below online scanners and perform a scan of your platform
then report back your results.

McAfee:

Greetings --

The type of behavior you describe, which also often applies to
Taskmgr.exe and MSConfig.exe (for WinXP), is typical behavior of more
than one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...klez.e@mm.html

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...yaha.c@mm.html

W32.Spybot.Worm
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...ybot.worm.html

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the
Spybot mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose
definitions aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free
on-line scanners to double-check your system.

Trend Micro - Free online virus Scan

McAfee Security - FreeScan

Symantec Security Check
