My friend figured she had a virus. Through 'this and that' she
thought deleting the SCVhost.exe would help. What a disaster.

Now I am trying to help her, and I'll put info in point form

1)Downloaded Nortan anti virus pro, trial. When I try to install I
get:" The widowns installer Service could not be accessed. This can
occurr if you are running wondows in safe mode, or if the windows
Instaler is not correctly installed. COntact your support personaell
for assistance."

2) cannot view anything on http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.
simply blank (nothing even saying cannot display page)

3)Same with "Add/Remove programs" Blank with text saying "Change
remove....."

4)upon any booting get "Nav alert Error starting RPC server"

5) updated to service patch 4 for windows 2000 Pro (from 2)

This is awful. Please keep in mind I am not a 'wizard; just far more
comfortable in a windows environment than her.

cannot find the CD for the life of us.

Fair enough. I know it sounds suspicious. But as I mentioned earlier
she is house sitting (for two years). It appears the computer is a
"Dell" so I suspect it came pre-installed.
The owner is a computer guru so there is no guarantee of that the CD
is even around (perhaps did it at his work). The frustrating thing
is, is that there is a pile of CD's next to the computer but none of
them are labelled windows 2000 or anything similar. Drag.

You need the W2K CD for re-installation as per "Pegasus".
Then re-apply service pack and all hotfixes.

IF you take it to a "computer place" ensure they Disk Image the whole
thing before anything else and guarantee data integrity.

What about getting another win2000 CD? We have access to a Win2000
Millinium CD. Could we use that to get the scvhost.exe file without
installing the whole thing?

You are very kind with your time and suggestions (you all are). IF I
may ask one more question? I managed to get my hands on another CD of
Windows 2000 professional version. While this isn't the original CD
used for the installation, it is the same version (Windows 2000
professional). Do you think using this CD for a "re-install" would
help (i.e. keep the data while "repairing" the original install)?

Again, I realize the difficulties of offerring help like this. I want
to save her some dough if possible as she has limited resources. IN
addition I want to save her the embarassment of screwing up her
'hosts' computer.

Understood. Protecting the data somehow beforehand may save yet
worse embarassment. If you have the capability to Disk Image the
volumes in advance then you'd have a fairly reliable safety net.
