Slow Shut Down
Posted by Mike on March 3rd, 2004

Greetings all,

We have over 100 machines on our W2K network - All P4-1.2g machines, all
running W2K. As we have been applying the critical patches and updates, the
systems have become real slow in shutting down.

In a prior MS Tech Builletin, there was a conflict between a Hotfix and SP2,
however, I see nothing documented about SP4 and a "clash" with a Hotfix.
Any ideas?

Thanks

If the slow-down seems to be an unusually long stale at "saving personal
settings", try the following steps:

1.. Run gpedit.msc from the Start-Run dialog box.
2.. Under 'Computer Configuration', expand the +Administrative Templates
+System +Logon trees.
3.. Double-click 'Maximum retries to unload and update user profile' from
the Policy column.
4.. On the Policy tab of the Properties window, select Enabled and change
Max Retries to "5" (default is "60").
This had an immediate effect on the time it took to shutdown my two Windows
2000 computers here at home. This edit also helped speedup my shutdown at
work.

Hope this helps,

- carl

Carl, that isn't a fix, it only hides the problem, which is a
bug introduced by one of Microsoft's Windows Update
patches (specifically, Q329170).

You'll discover if you stop the Print Spooler service prior
to shutting down, _or_ if you uninstall the Q329170 patch,
the delay no longer occurs.

The way to actually fix the problem is to get Microsoft's
later patch, Q828153, which updates SPOOLSV.EXE.

In news:1Tt1c.679330$X%5.615280@pd7tw2no,
Mike <hornerm@esquimalt.ca> fumbled, fiddled and fingered:

goto Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs > Change/Remove Programs
and see if Q329170 is listed as an update if it is remove it.

plus

start > run > gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration> Administrative
Template
System > Logon > Maximum retries to unload and update user
profile ... set
enabled and to say 5 ... default if not configured is 60!!

There appears to be a hotfix available from MS (thanks Neo)
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;814770

but you will have to telephone MS to order it.

Thanks for the reply

Unfortunately 814770 will only apply to SP3 - we have SP4 loaded.
However, setting the local policy did work and I thank you for that.

Thanks for the reply Steve

Unfortunately 828153 did not work (after 45 minutes on hold with Microsoft
to get the patch). However, setting the local policy did work and I thank
you for that.

BTW Q329170 was removed a long time ago. I am wondering if maybe, just by
installing it and then removing, it may have left some orphans?? Just food
for thought.

Thanks again all
