- Who causes Sharing Violation?
- Posted by Joe on October 10th, 2003
Hello -
I have this folder on my machine that I would like to delete because it is
empty and it does not make any sense. When I try to delete it I get a
Sharing Violation. Is there a tool that I can use to determine which
process/program is accessing that folder?
In particular the (empty) folder C:\Program Files\microsoft
frontpage\version3.0\bin does not make any sense because I do not have
FrontPage installed. I have no idea who created that thing ... maybe it
happened during the Office 2002 installation?
Thanks,
Joe

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode, then deleting it?

That's actually a good idea ... I should try it. It will probably just
complain about the missing folder or recrate it when I boot it up again. I
just don't want to screw up my Office installation. You never know with
that stuff.
Thanks,
Joe

FrontPage installed. I have no idea who created that thing.
I have a suspicion that folder is created by IIS even when you choose not to
install the frontpage extensions.

What is IIS? Would you have any suggestions how to turn it off?
Thanks,
Joe

IIS = Internet Information Server. See Windows help for iis. As I wrote, it is
only a suspicion I have; I'm not going to re-install W2000 just to find out.

Hi Joe,
About the C:\Program Files\microsoft frontpage folder. As explained in Microsoft
Knowledge Base Article KB281449:
"Windows File Protection (WFP) handles the folders under the Winlogon process.
There is no practical way to remove the folders, but the folders can be hidden
from view." For more information, see:
KB281449 - Error Message Occurs When You Attempt to Delete Folders
