I take it that you feel it's time to reinstall. And I concur.

Give your self a good couple uninterrupted hours. It can be an all day
project if things go badly (or even if they go well and you have a slow
machine).

a 12 step program.

1) Backup any personal datafiles you want to keep. (Not programs, those,
you want to reinstall fresh)

prep: need windows2000 cd and THE PRODUCT KEY, your software disks and
their product keys, and any hardware driver disks
2) Make sure the BIOS is set to boot from CD -- before booting from hdd
3) Insert the windows 2000 cd in drive
4) reboot

the setup screen should come up.

5) elect to not repair
6) delete the windows partition
7) create it anew
8) format it (often an hourlong operation, no need to babysit)

9) elect to install in the new partition.

follow add'l prompts

10) install any printers, sound cards and whatever other hardware drivers.

11) install your software
12) restore your files.

12a) Optional, but recommended: run windows update (you will need to setup
AOL, or another ISP first) Can be many hours dowload. Start with SP4 only,
then work thru the critical udpates. Be leery of the offered driver
updates.
