2000 Active Directory and Server 2003
Posted by Razor on January 28th, 2004

Hello,

I have a Windows 2000 Server that has Active Directory on
it. A Windows Server 2003 was added to the domain and
Active Directory was installed on it. I want to be able
to manage group policies from the new 2003 server but
when I attempt to go to the "Group Policy" tab of an OU I
get the following message:

The domain controller for Group Policy operations is not
available. Domain controller not found for mydomain.com

When I cancel that message the entire tab is "greyed" out
and I am unable to select anything.

I can manage the group policies from the Windows 2000
Server.

Is there something I can do to correct this or is this
working as designed? I am unaware if any domain preps
were done when the 2003 server was put into Active
Directory.

Thanks

Hi Razor,

Do you have SP3 or higher installed on the Windows 2000 DC? If not, there
could be a problem communicating over LDAP between the two DCs. This is
because Windows Server 2003 DCs sign and seal all LDAP traffic by default
while Windows 2000 DCs with SP2 or lower do not. For more information, see
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tre...d/signseal.asp.

Also, you might want to try following the resolutions proposed in the
following KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;257435.

I hope this helps,
