- Active D Sites and Serv demoting, promoting and renaming
- Posted by Phil D on March 5th, 2004
After recently demoting a Domain Controller (I will call
it ALPHA) we noticed that it still shows up under
Sites>Default-First-Site-Name>Servers in Active Directory
Sites and Services however there are no NTDS Setting
properties; We would like to delete it, Would that cause
any problems?
We would also like to reuse that name (ALPHA) on a new
server and promote it as a DC. Would there be any
problems with that?
Thanks in advanced!

Phil you are right here, The Domain Controller should be deleted from the
particular site it belonged to.

Thanks Chris, Do you know if I can reuse that name?

Yes you can use the name again. You can have a look at the KB below and
follow threes steps to ensure there is no data in Active Directory that
belongs to the old DC.

Controller Demotion:

This object can safely be deleted using AD sites & services. I believe I
read somewhere that this "lingering domain controller object" behaviour is
caused by some 3rd party "AD aware" programs which may be installed on the
domain controller.
As long as the lingering computer object deletes OK then there should be no
problem with you reusing the name on another DC.
