Active Directory Access Extremely Slow
Posted by Marcus de Leon on November 28th, 2003

Hi,

We have Windows 2003 server as the active directory server and XP
workstations. Loggin in is painfully slow and also directory access is
really slow as well. This was the first time I set this up, can anybody help
me with this problem?

Thanks again

In advance, no solution for your problem, but I must recognize the same
behavior, in *general*. Coming from different kinds of Unix server, if it
was NeXT, Sun, or AIX, (or even Linux), the Windows Server 2k3 stuff is
damned slow, especially when the Exchange Server is installed, with
Active Directory running. Such solutions exists several years on NeXT
(netinfo) or AIX (under /etc/security), and they are all much faster and
more comfortable than this MS stuff. I hope this is one of my last
projects developing on Windows-Systems. Aaarggghh!

When you say "slow", there are several factors involve, such as:

1. Hardware ? Such as the amount of RAM, the CPU speed.
2. Any applications run on the DC beside AD, such as backend DB, IIS.....
3. How is your site setup. The location of the DC and your XP clients are on the same network ?
4. How big is your forest in term of domain(s) and DC. How many users do you have. Any replication traffics exist.
5. How complex your domain policy is (enforced on each client)
6. What involves on each XP when s/he boots the PC.

Here is my lab system (still use evaluation CD): 1-forest, 1-domain, and 2-DC on two Dell Pentium II with 400 MHZ CPU, 256MB RAM. 5
users with XP Professional. SQL Server 2000 and IIS-6 run on one DC. I use default GPO for all 5 clients. Built in DNS (intra DNS
only). Both DC and 5 clients are on the same network segment. Intranet (local internal). Log on to the domain is very fast. It is
approx. 6-12 seconds different between a domain login and local login for each XP client.

I'm working on a small network (a dozen or so clients, w2k server with XP,
95 and 98 clients) and it's taking 2 minutes to log on to the domain.
There's obviously something seriously wrong here, but I haven't found the
answer yet.
