Active Directory Forrest Root
Posted by Steve on November 19th, 2003

Hello all I ask this Question Yesterday but let me
rephrase it a little.

When you setup the First server in the active directory
2003
Forrest it becomes the Forrest root. I know that you can
Transfer most all the roles to other DC in the Forrest
such as Rid, Pdc, Infrastructure Master and Global
Catalog are there any other roles that makeup the Forrest
roots. For instance if a machine that is the current
Forrest root DC was in a site that is not considered
Corporate Head Quarters and I know that this doesn't make
a difference to the Domain but for management peace of
mind how and what would have to be done to transfer all
roles to the Corporate Head Quarters DC.

Any Help would be great.
Steve

Steve your question does not make sense.

You have a number of DCs in your Forest Root Domain (FRD.
The first DC installed holds all FIVE roles and is ALSO a Global Catalog
server (GC)

Five Roles - PDC, RID, Infra, Schema Master and Domain Naming Master.

You may at any time move cooperatively any of the roles form this first
server to any other DC in your FRD.
You can also make any DC a GC at any time.
You make a DC a GC using the Active Directory Sites and Services MMC snap-in

If you wish to move the roles to another DC (such as one in your corp
headquarter site) then just use the appropriate tool to move the role.
Those tools are:-
Schema Master - Schema Admin MMC snap-in
Domain Naming Master - Active Directory DOmaisn and Trusts MMC snap-in
RID, PDC & Infra - Active Directory Users and Computers MMC snap-in
