- AD and SUBNETS
- Posted by Hanan on February 24th, 2004
What I have:
Main Office with 2003 Standard Server
10 Branch Locations with 3-10 workstations each
ALL computer have static IP. ALL in same subnet mask.
ALL IP's have branch specific third octet (ie. Branch 9
has 21.0.9.xxx) Currently, my server's settings do not
specifiy anything in the Subnet section of Active
Directory (Active Directory Sites and Services > Sites >
Subnets).
Question:
Should it? If so, what would I use for the Subnet
Address? Mask?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Hanan,
Have you already created sites and site links? If not you will need to do
that first.
Then you will need to define subnets and link them to the appropriate sites.
If you don't add the appropriate subnets to each site, clients will be
unable to determine which site they are in. Using branch 9 as an example
here is the address and mask to enter:
Address: 21.0.9.0
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Create a subnet object with the main office's address range and then create
a subnet object for each of the branch offices with their address range.

Hi. You can define a Network (Subnet) as well the subnet mask with in a
subnet object in AD Sites & Services. In Windows Server 2003 you can define
and use sites with out have a DC in each site. This may can be use full if
you want to define Group Policies at the site level if you wish different
configuration based on current location.
