adprep /domainprep not working
Posted by Rolf on December 12th, 2003

I'm trying to upgrade to server2003.
The domain is a "single-labeled" domain.
After modifying registry according to Q300684, the network works fine,
except for messages about W32time not beeing able to find DNS-server.
I have not looked into this, but I suspect it is caused by the
single-labeled domain name.

adprep /forestprep has been done.

adprep /domainprep does not work.
After 1 second I'm back at the command prompt.
There is no message from adprep.
No messages are made in the event viewer doing this.
(If I run adprep on the wrong server, I am informed by adprep about which
server to use)
The main reason for upgrading to 2003 now is to change the domain name.

Perhaps the single-labeled domain name is stopping me from upgrading?

If I create a new domain, will I be able to transfer the users with
passwords and settings?

Hi Rolf-

It's possible the single label domain name is the culprit. You could use
Active Directory Migration Tool version 2 to migrate the user accounts and
passwords between domains if you create a new domain.

Here's a link to information on that tool:
