Applying Computer Settings for hours
Posted by Rp on March 5th, 2004

I decided that before I rool my exchange 2003 server out that I would in
fact like to make it a member of the domain. But I have everything already
setup on my exchange server so this might not have been the greast
brainchild of an idea that I've had.

Anyhow the adprep /forest and domain on the windows 2000 server wwnt great.
SO I added the Domain roll onto the win2k3 server it told me to restart. I
restarted and no I've been sittng at the applying computer settings for
hours. Is this normal and should I just let it go for a while longer. I
mean it actually looks like it is doing something. I am able to see the
administrative share, the web site is up. but no one (meaning myself and the
other 2 test users ) are not able to get connect to the exchange server.

Some other things to ponder. I had setup this server as a Certificate
server and I needed to remove this in order to make the server a member of
the domain.

Thanks

The "Waiting for computer settings" issue is most likely this computer's
inability to find the SRV records in DNS. Point its resolver (DNS client)
to the DNS server hosting your domain SRV records and that should do it.

Regarding the Certificate Server. That is behaviour as designed. Once you
decide a computer will be your Cert server - that's that.

It's a small network, the DNS server is the "primary" domain controller and
the win2k3 server is pointing to it.

Your message gave me more to look at though so I tried this
http://support.microsoft.com/default...1505#appliesto

On the "Primary" the netdiag /fix everything passed
On the win2k3 server I am able to boot into safe mode with networking The
netdiag /fix return this error on the domain ownership test. [Warning] Ths
system volume has not been completely replicated to the local machine. This
machine is not working properly as a DC.

I'm going to see if I cannot get some more information, but this seemed
significant.

On the DNS server in
_msdcs/dc/_sites/default-first-site-name/_tcp
_msdcs/dc/_tcp

I have a _ldap entry for all three servers including the win2k3 but only
the other two windows 2k servers have a _kerberos entry.

The net diag is showing

Kerberos does not have a tick for ....

So I'm looking at
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;244474

So we'll see.

Well I did all these things. And still no help.

So in safe mode I decided to turn a bunch of service to manual such as:

World wide web
Windows Media
Live Comm serv
IIS Admin
Kerberos Key Dist
All Exchange Services
SMTP

So now I'm going to see if I can get these services started and running.'

Thanks

and the controller booted up no problem
