I noticed on every Windows xp client I cannot search
active directory. The active directory search box appears
but then it times out and does not allow you to do
anything. Is there a service I need to stop or maybe
something I need to install on the workstations? Each
work station logging into the domain.

that behavior is weired and not usual. Do you have any Eventlogs on the client
to give you an idea where this is coming from? You can look them up at
www.eventid.net.
