- Does 2003 Standard Edition have to run on the primary domain controller
- Posted by Jim on December 1st, 2003
Can I install Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition on a
server that is simply a data server in the network, and
not a primary domain controller. Active Directory
services are not running on this server.
I need to replace an evaluation copy of Server 2003
Enterprise Edition, but do not want to make the server a
DNS or domain controller. Can I do this?
Thanks.

Yes, you can do this. 2003 (nor any server OS) is not required to serve as a
DC. Keep in mind that you cannot do an inplace upgrade of the eval copy to
2003 Std (you could to Ent Ed). You'll have to reinstall Windows from
scratch.
