- Global Catalog
- Posted by Catalin Botezan on December 7th, 2003
I am trying to setup a windows 2003 server on a stand alone server
I promoted it to a Domain Controller, everything went fine but when I tried
to add new groups and users I realized that I can't add members to a group
and when I click on a member of tab I get an error that says it cannot find
the path to the GC
I went in and checked the check box for GC in the for the site NTDS Settings
but still does not work
Can anyone give a hint
thanks,
Catalin

Hi Catalin-
Are there any related events appearing in the Directory Service event log?
How many domains do you have (or have you ever had) in your forest?
Barring any events appearing in your event logs, you could enable some
enhanced DS logging for the Global Catalog and Replication Events per the
article below:

Thank you for answering
I want to add more details to what I wrote initially
From what I experienced I think is trying to locate the
Global Catalog; is there a way to set the path to the
Global Catalog?
This will be the only domain controler for our network and
I am planning to replace the old NT4 server with this by
setting it up without beeing attached to the network, this
way I can keep the same server and domain name and just
replace the old server with the new one when I am ready
At this moment the server is not connected to anything
only to a switch that alowed me to promote it to a domain
controler
I will enable the Diagnostic Event Logging for Active
Directory Services and see what happens
thanks again,
Catalin

I would look at your DNS and make sure there is an entry
for the GC service. AD is dependant on DNS for all path
related info so that would be the first place I would
look.

Thank you very much, that worked
I thought the DNS service is not indispensable unless
there is more then one domain.
Anyways thanks again
