- Global catalog question
- Posted by Lamar Thomas on March 5th, 2004
We are running a Windows NT 4.0 domain (one PDC and one BDC). I want to
upgrade my PDC to Windows 2003 and AD. I will then install two NEW Windows
2003 DCs and remove the old NT BDC and the first DC (the one that was the
old PDC). I will enable the Windows Server 2003 functional level.
My question is this:
Do I have to be concerened about moving things like the "Global Catalog"
service? Do I have to "Move" any services from the first DC (the old PDC)
to one of the NEW DCs BEFORE I remove it from the network? Thanks for any
input.

You will have to move all the FSMO roles from the originally upgraded server
to one of the new ones before removing it. It can be done forcefully but it
much easier to do while the server is up...

As scott said yes, you need to tahe care of FSMO roles, but also you have to
make your new DC's a Global catalog server, as AD can not function properly
without GC. And dont forget about DNS server.
