- Having a hard time transferring schema master role.
- Posted by JeffInLancaster on March 4th, 2004
We have been running a Win 2K server for some time as our
dc. My boss just picked up the Action Pack and is anxious
to try out the Win 2K3 small business server. So we built
a system and loaded it up. I ran dcpromo and promoted it
to an additional dc in our domain. Now I wish to make it
the schema master, but when I run the schema snapin and
try to switch dc's I get a message that the RPC service is
unavailable. I checked each dc and the RPC service is
running. Also the new dc (2K3) will not do any
authentication. I've shut down the 2K dc and tried to log
on to the domain from one of our other systems, after
running dcpromo on the 2K3 system of course, and systems
seem to log on after a long time but I don't have access
to all resources. All the systems are pointing to it's
DNS server as well as the 2K DNS server. Any insights
would be appriciated. Thanx

Small Business Server have to be the first DC in Active Directory and can't
be added as an additional Domain Controller, FMSO roles can't be transferred
of an SBS Server and it have to be the forest root and it doesn't support
child domains. It supports an additional Domain Controller for fault
tolerance propose.
