Losing Domain Policy Changes
Posted by Kevin Murphy on February 13th, 2004

I've made changes to our Win2K AD Domain's password policies via the Domain
Security Policy tool. However, whenever I reset the main AD server (first
one installed) I lose these changes. Any ideas?

What do you mean by reset? Restart?
When you say lose the changes, do you mean that the changes are not
immediately available on all DCs?

Maybe this will help clarify a possible solution. All GPOs are written to
the DC that holds the PDC emulator role by default. So, most likely your
first DC holds this role. When it is restarted after a GPO change, it has
not yet had time to replicate the changes to the other DCs.

could this be the problem you are seeing?

Yes, when I restart the server, I lose the settings.

The changes ARE immediately available on the other servers in the domain.
(well maybe not immediateley, but the changes DO take effect)

And the change was made several days before the restart.
