- moving from nt4/2000 domain to 2003 domain
- Posted by Aaron on January 5th, 2004
Here is what I am thinking about doing...currently we have ad in mixed mode(1x2000 DC, and 2 nt4 bdcs) And we want to make all the domain controllers 2k3. I have a few questions about changing the domain to native mode...I know this has to be done when there are no nt4 bdc's, but what if I need these bdc's for printservices, fileserving etc???
What I wanted to do was upgrade the 2000 Dc to 2003, but the Dell media I have wont let me upgrade at all becuase it says "upgrading is not supported by microsoft" which I know is crap(Dell just doesnt want to support it)
so basically I have to start w/ a clean install of 2003. here is what I am thinking, if someone more experienced reads this, please tell me if I am crazy.
1) get rid of nt4 dcs
2) raise function level to native
3)run adprep on the 2k dc
4) install a fresh copy of 2003 on a new server and make it a dc
5) format the old 2k dc, and repeat step 4.
I think this is right. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

the w2k DC down to a member server so that all the info is removed from AD
