New Child Domain with SMTP? Possible?
Posted by Harrison Schofill on February 22nd, 2004

Have a question that I am sure I know the answer to but
don't want to believe it...

Here it is. I have an empty root that I need to bring a
child domain under. I dont have the luxery of IPSec
tunnels and RPC is cut off. My thinking is because of
the Domain Naming Master requiring RPC I will not be able
to promote a child DC into the forest without having
RPC. The remote site has nothing in place, so I am
trying to avoid having to have the GC shipped on media.
IPSec tunnels wont be in for another month or so....

I am assuming SMTP wont do me much good here.

You need complete unhindered communication between the root domain and the
remote subnet where you want to isntall the child domain. This includes
complete unhindered communication for DNS, RPC, LDAP and Kerberos. Also, if
you use your ISP's DNS server in any machines' IP properties, this will
cause a disaster too.

SMTP site links are designed for asynch connections, such as dialup or ADSL
(well, maybe we can get away with IP links with ADSL, depending on the
speed). You'll still need RPC for SMTP links...

Thanks. That is what I was afraid of...IPSec is turning
out to be more of a political battle...

Politics unfortunately rule when politics have NOTHING to do with the
working mechanics of infrastructures.
