I'm trying to establish a trust relationship between our
new Win2k3 DC and our old NT4 SBS PDC so that I can
experiment with using the ADMT to clone users from the old
NT domain. I'm interested in a gentle migration of users.
I used NETDOM to add a oneway trust from the new domain to
the old. The trust appears in the trusted domains list on
the new domain, but when I try and validate it, I get the
message "Windows can not find a domain controller for the
OLDDOMAIN domain. Verify that a DC is available and try
again."
I've proven that the network connection is fine, and I've
created entries in the LMHOSTS file for the old domain and
old PDC. I checked that WINS has static entries of [1Ch]
for the old domain, but can't see one for the PDC [1Bh].
Having created the complementary LMHOSTS entries on the
NT4 PDC, I can see both such entries for the new domain in
WINS.
Is the missing old domain PDC [1Bh] reference on the
Win2k3 server the likely cause of this? If so, how do I
create it. The Win2k3 server seems to ignore the
relevant "\0x1b" entry in the LMHOSTS file.
I've checked other possibilities such
as "RestrictAnonymous", but can't see any other cause.
Attempting a one-way trust from the NT4 PDC only yields
a "Access is denied" message.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be most grateful.
Thanks in advance, Innes
