odd DNS problem...
Posted by Nathan Walter on March 6th, 2004

I have 1 particular DNS record in my zone that doesn't seem to resolve
reliably. About 1 in every 10 tries it actually resolves when using NS
lookup but the rest return an error unknown can't find serve: Non-Existent
domain. The rest of the zone works properly all other servers resolve
without a problem, this is an AD integrated zone. THe other odd thing is
that this only happens when using the primary DNS server, if I use our
secondary dns server it will resolve 100% of the time....

Seems to be two issues going on. If you have one particlular record not
resolving correctly, I'm going to assume based on the minimal info you gave
us, that you maybe be using your ISP's DNS in IP properties. If you can you
post an ipconfig /all so we can check your configuration?

As for the Can't find server non existent etc message, that's just saying
you don't have a reverse zone created. If you do, then there's no PTR record
for your DNS server.

Ok.. a little more info..
I am currently at home using an outside ISP.. When i configure my
connection to use the ISPs DNS servers and use a NSlookup for the flakey
server, it returns correctly about 1 in 10 tries any other server returns
100%. When I reconfigure my connection to use our internal DNS server from
externally i get the same results. When I VPN in to the network and use the
internal DNS server it works 100% of the time for everything. I guess if
you want to try it yourself the server is mutant.fielding.edu . Currently it
seems to be a little better, it only fails 1 out of 5 attempts.

I am getting this in the event log on the server about once a day.. BUt its
the only thing in there...

The DNS server has encountered numerous run-time events. These are usually
caused by the reception of bad or unexpected packets, or from problems with
or excessive replication traffic. The data is the number of suppressed
events encountered in the last 15 minute interval.

Hmm, that server doesn't exist:
C:\>ping mutant.fielding.edu
Unknown host mutant.fielding.edu.

Maybe it is a flaky server. :-)
Try this server and let me know how you make out:
4.2.2.2

4004 errors? What's the Event ID? If it;s the one I'm thinking of, they
actually say you can ignore it. You would have to run a netmon to discover
what IP it's coming from and if external, you can block that IP. If
internal, I would wonder why it'scoming from that machine.
