- pre-windows 2000 Domain Name
- Posted by MS Newsgroups on January 13th, 2004
Background:
----------------
In our AD forest, the forest functional level is at "Windows 2000" and the
functional level of each child domain is at "Windows 2000 Native". We
currently manage two child-domains in the forest and want to consolidate
them into one domain. The first domain is cahslab.colostate.edu and the
second domain is cahs.colostate.edu.
When logging into a computer in the forest, the list of available domains
shows the Pre-Windows 2000 domain name, NOT the active directory domain
name. For example, the Pre-Windows 2000 domain name for the
cahslab.colostate.edu domain is CAHSSDOM and the Pre-Windows 2000 domain
name for the cahs.colostate.edu domain is CAHSFDOM. (student and faculty
domains.)
All of the domain controllers in both domains are Windows Server 2003, and
we have no NT servers or workstations in either domain. We have Exchange
2000 in one domain (cahs.colostate.edu aka CAHSFDOM), that will be an
in-place migration to Exchange 2003 in the immediate future.
----------------
The question(s):
Why does the list of available domains show the pre-windows 2000 domain
names, and not the active directory domain names? i.e.,
cahslab.colostate.edu shows as CAHSSDOM.
Is it possible to change this so that the list shows the active directory
(dns) domain names? If it is possible, can it be changed on a per-domain
basis, or is it a forest-wide change?
Thanks for any help/ideas.

This is the Netbios Domain name and can not be changed to reflect the DNS
domain name. Currently

Thanks richard,
Does the situation change if the forest was 2003 native mode? I've read
about the capabilities of changing domain names in server 2003, but don't
know if this is a possibility.
Thanks.

In article <#IfBpuh2DHA.560@TK2MSFTNGP11.phx.gbl>, MS Newsgroups says...
sorry, that won't help you in your case:
Netbios Domain-Names may not contain a dot. And Single Lable DNS-Names as
Domain-Names (e.g. "company.") will provide you with more trouble as you want
and are everything but recommended from MS.
