RIPrep and RIS on Windows 2003 Server -- Images not working
Posted by Robin Coombe on February 20th, 2004

Can anyone point me in the direction of where I'm going wrong,

I have installed RIS onto my Windows Server 2003 server and have added
several images onto it making them available for depolyment.
1. Windows 2000 Standard ( Standard basic image created from install
CD )
2. Windows 2000 Complete ( Complete System Image of a computer with
all Apps installed and configured )
3. Windows XP Standard ( Standard basic image created from install
CD )

I have followed all the microsoft instructions for setting it up correctly
but am having a problem,
When I PXE boot a computer to begin installing a new image into it using
RIS, I only ever see the following 2 options,
1. Windows 2000 Standard
3. Windows XP Standard
However option 2. Windows 2000 Complete is Always missing.

If I look at the properties of the RIS Server in AD Users & Computers, at
the RIS Tab, it lists all 3 images as Available.
Security for the Images (and the Image Folders) are all identical.

No matter what I do I never get the option to install the "Complete System
Image" (option number 2.)

Am I missing something blindingly obvious .... or just doing something
totally stupid ?

Thanks for you help,

Robin Coombe.

I'm guessing that the complete system image with applications was RiPreped
from a computer that was installed locally rather than from the RIS image on
the server. That would account for this.

In order for a RIS image to display on the download screen, it must either
be a flat image from CD or a RiPreped image created from one of the flat
images on the RIS server. IOW - install image number 1, modify it, RiPrep
it - and I'll bet it shows up then.

Let me know if this works.
