Roaming Profiles
Posted by Mick on February 27th, 2004

I need to move the shared folder that has all the users
roaming profile in it. I'm a domain admin and when I try
to copy or move this folder I get an access denied error.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well I made sure the users were logged off and got the
same error. these folders are created by the system and
show no ACL inside the properties->security. If I take
ownership of the folder it brakes the connection to the
users
connected/logged on to the server U can nither copy nor
move the user profile. So what I Suggest to u is, Tell
all the users to logoff from the server and move the
shared folder that has all the users roaming profile to
the destination and DONT FORGET TO CHANGE TO NEW
DESTINATION FOR THE USER PROFILE.

Could you restore from a backup to the new server/location?

Mick says...

you can get the ownership, add yourself to the NTFS-Security, then copy the
stuff, and change the ownership to the user again. In Windows Server 2003 you
are able to set the ownership by pressing the advanced button on the security
tab, in Windows 2000 you need to use "Subinacl /onlyfile filename.ext
/setowner=domain\newowner".

Or you can just change the profile path if your users are working every day on
the same machines. The domain profile will not be found, so the locally stored
copy will be used and saved to the profile path when logging off.
If you go this way, test first to see if that's the result you want to use and
it doesn't have any undesired effects.

Gruesse - Sincerely,

Ulf B. Simon-Weidner
