- Server takes 15 minutes to shut down
- Posted by Freddy on March 1st, 2004
Hello out there;
I have inherited a domain on which I have very little history. I have two
servers that each take about 15 minutes to shut down. They are not exchange
servers and are not running anything special. One of the server functions
was not needed, so I properly removed it from the domain, formatted the
drives and installed Windows 2003. All goes well, until I have it join the
domain with the old server's name. At that point it takes about 15 min. to
shut down each time. Nothing elso but Win2003 is on the server. No roles
have been given it yet.
What is doing this. It must be someting with the directory and maybe
something associated with that server's name? I suspect my other server has
a simular problem.
Can anyone offer help?
Thanks in advance :-)

Check DNS and make sure no old records exist related to the old server.

I have found DNS problems can lead to long logon/logoff
problems and yes, up 10 minutes or so. Check your DNS
settings, etc. for problems. Not sure about logoff ...but
logon KDC problems can also take a long time. Can you
ping, nslookup, any DCs by IP and FQDN?

Hello Glen
Thanks for the reply. I checked the DNS server and there are no duplicate IPs nor is there a duplicate name. The problem is not logging on, just logging off. I can ping the server, perform nslookup on it and ping by FQDN
Any other ideas
Thanks agai

Have you got Exchange installed? Because it is a known issue. See KB article

I think you may have a group Policy set that clears the paging file on shutdown.
This often causes these sysptoms.
I would suggest looking here.
