user account migration
Posted by Gary on December 3rd, 2003

Hi all,

I going to upgrade our network to Wins 2000 with AD service. I will keep the
NT 4.0 (PDC and BDC, both of them is running some application which may not
support by wins 2000) to run and join the new wins 2000 domain. How can I
migrate the user and computer accounts from NT 4.0 to Wins 2000 AD by using
ADMT? I need to keep the Wins 2000 AD running in Mixed mode.

Thanks,
Gary.

Gary,

It rather depends on actually what you are planning to do. You install talk
about upgrading your domain to Active Directory in which case you upgrade
the PDC to Windows 200x it there is no migration to do since we take the
account database on the PDC and turn it into an Active Directory.

If you are actually talking about putting in place a new forest and
migrating the user accounts from your NT 4.0 Domain to a new Active
Directory domain, then ADMT is a tool you can use.
There is masses of information on how to use ADMT and migrate a Windows NT
4.0 Domain to Active Directory on the Microsoft web site.
Below are a few links to get you started, but you first need to decide and
understand what it is you are actually trying to do.
