- Win2003: Hiding shares in Net Neighborhood
- Posted by dsmcd on February 26th, 2004
Hello...
I'm looking for a way In Window 2003 server to prevent users who
are browsing Network Neighborhood from seeing shares that they
do not have access to.
Any suggstions?
Thx,
D.

You can add a "$" suffix to the share name, but this will hide it from
everyone. Beyond that, no, there is not a way to hide the shares. If you do
have sensitive shares, my recommendation is that you make them hidden by
naming them ShareName$ (and going to \\Server\ShareName$ instead). You can,
of course apply ACLs to all shares to control who can access their contents.

dsmcd says...
sorry, as far as I know there's no way to do this - however you'd be able to
hide shares by changing the name to a name with a $ at the end or you'd be able
to hide complete servers with the command net config server /hidden:yes

Thanks. That's pretty much what I suspected. Shame thought.
My users are used to the NetWare file system.
Thanks.
