Win3.11 and NetScape 3.04: Certificate has an Invalid Signature...
Posted by Patrick on April 2nd, 2005

EZoto,

Don't know if you have any workaround for
this or not:

It's getting tough to shop around secured
sites these days.

Increasingly, I'm getting this error message
showing more often when connecting to HTTPS sites...

'The Server's Certificate has an Invalid Signature.'
'You Will not be able to Connect to this Site Securely'

If it means getting another browser, I won't be doing
that with this current system.

I guess it's time to shop for a new system.

Have you disabled the javascript?

Usually off, but with on, same result.
I wouldn't think JS would have anything to
do with it, as I can't get to the site
to begin with, yes?

I tried and failed with 3.04 but I do use Netscape 4.08 also with the
java disabled and didn't have a problem getting in. It will prompt
you to accept the certificate. Try it and see what happens. I hope
it works.

While the specific language in that error message is not quite what I would
expect to see, this *might* nonetheless be related to an expired root
certificate. If so, see this link for instructions on how to update:

Yes, it *does* still work, for v3.0 versions of Netscape Navigator ONLY
(including the 32-bit ones) despite some conjecture to the contrary which
occurred here a year or so ago. I just tested it (albeit, under Win9x, since
that's what I had "up" at the moment -- but given the actual page context, I
highly doubt that makes any difference).

Note that if you want to do similar for a 4.0-series version of Netscape, you
need to edit the link to reflect that. I *think* this is correct:

<http://www.verisign.com/update-cgi/outPage.exe?&ns4=../docs/html/help/ns4.0help.htm>

But I do not currently have any 4.x version of Netscape installed to test it
with.

Why not? Any system that can run Netscape 3.04 can also run at least Opera
v3.62 -- and probably better/faster/etc.

That may be true (I don't know what you're running now); but if it is, it is
near-certainly not for this reason.

Yes, it just worked for me too, thanks. Not that I use Navigator
3.04 very much, but updating was easy and free. The old certificate
said it expired in1999 and the new one says 2010.
