How do I erase all my old stuff?
Posted by Sarah on May 20th, 2004

I want to sell my old PC. Obviously, I've deleted all my
files, but how do I make sure that it's all erased.

I can no longer connect the machine to the internet, so
can't download any scrubbing tools.

I don't have the time to do anything complex, nor have
time to sift through the mountains of disks to reinstall
everything if I reformmatted the C: drive.

There's nothing very secret or personal on there.

Any ideas much appreciated.
regards
Sarah

Empty Windows trash-can.
Boot from DOS.
Delete the temporary internet files folder. (Using IE to delete this,
doesn't always work ...)
Do disk-defrag. This will re-allocate some of the clusters the old
deleted files used, and essentially wipe them.

So far for non-complex solutions...

This will make it hard enough for the average user never to see your
old deleted files again (but NOT impossible...)

If you are concerned about the possibility of someone unerasing your files,
simply fill up the disk by repeatedly copying something to it (such as a CD)
and then delete it. Once a file has been copied over it's virtually
unrecoverable.
