IE Problem
Posted by Larry on May 23rd, 2004

I'm having a problem with IE5.5. On one particular website which I use a
lot, on certain pages the IE window opens in an abnormal size, about one
inch wide, and about 3 screens tall. Obviously, it's unusable like that and
the window will not resize. It's been doing this now for 3 or 4 days. No
other websites exhibit this behavior. Should I reinstall IE 5.5? If so, how?
Do I just rerun setup.exe? Are all the necessary files already available?
TIA.

5.5 has a repair option: Start, Settings, Control Panel,
Add/Remove Programs, double-click on IE 5.5 and you should see
the repair option there.

I would suggest that you scan for scumware using Spybot S&d,
AdAware or another reputable spyware removal tool.

Thanks, Kay. I ran Spybot S&D 1.3. Just found some tracking cookies and
Alexa. Anything specific I should look for? I wasn't concerned about
anything I saw. I'll go ahead and try the repair. Any special instructions
for that, like closing everything, or doing it in safe mode? Thanks.

It's always a good idea to close all open apps before doing something like that, and especially to close all browser windows and disable the anti-virus app.

I am curious what web site is causing the anomaly, and why the page is opening in a new window rather than in the same window you already have open. Perhaps if you supply the link to one of the abnormally-sized pages, we could look at the code to see if it is due to their problem rather than yours.

Thanks for the response, Glee. I ran the repair as Kay suggested and I'm
optimistic that it has solved my problem. The problematic website was
www.thegolfchannel.com and I've tried several pages and the abnormally sized
windows have not reappeared since the repair. It didn't happen on all pages
of their website, only some, so I'm not yet convinced the problem is solved,
but I am optimistic. If I have any recurrences, I'll post a link to the
specific page under this thread. Thanks.

Fingers crossed. Kay is a pretty smart cookie, so if you post back help should come along fairly quickly.
