- Internet Explorer 5.5
- Posted by John on December 5th, 2005
I'm running IE5 on 95B and everything runs smoothly. A couple of websites
such as ABCnews.com have started referring me to Microsoft Update to get 5.5
or 6. All I can find is 5.01. Is 5.5 still available at Microsoft? I seem
to remember a security problem that caused them to withdraw it.

Hugh, I should have mentioned I had already tried that evolt link and all I
ended up with was iexplore.exe and a half dozen associated files and no
installer. When I clicked the iexplore as far as I could tell it ran my
version 5. Do you have any insight into using those files? Copy them to my
IE directory overwriting what I already have?

What version is listed when you click on Help
and select "About Internet Explorer"?
Sure. I installed them at one time, with no problem.
I am using 98SE and IE6 now though.
No. No. No. A 1000 time NO!
That link should get you an 84 MB download.
As far as I remember, IE55SP2.EXE is a self-extracting installer.
Where did you download it to?
I would try again, downloading it to a new folder,
and then run IE55SP2.EXE.

I tried again from a different mirror and the download in progress is 86.1
MB. The first try gave me a 7MB zip file. Thank a bunch.

Here's part of my standard blurb that I haven't used for a while:
-------
The 84MB downloaded "self-extracting archive" method:
Assorted IE versions:
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/microsoft/ie
http://www2.kansas.net/download.asp
http://admin.utep.edu/Default.aspx?tabid=1307
After downloading, double-click on the 84MB file. It should
automatically create a new sub-folder under its current location
called "IE 5.5 SP2 Full", and auto-extract yet another 84MB of
CAB files and a few EXEs into it. To install, go into the new
sub-folder and run ie5setup.exe
-------
Here's part of my reminder file of how I reinstall W95 and IE5.5, including
the numbered IE "updates" that have happened since 5.5 SP2 was released.
----------------------------------------------
Go to IE5.5 folder on slave drive
ie5setup.exe
323759
324929
328389
328970 (says SP2 needed?!?!?)
330994
810847
Install LAN drivers
Modify Network settings and protocols
Power off & plug in LAN cable
Set sharing options
dun14-95.exe Dial-Up Networking 1.4 (or earlier?)
w95ws2setup.exe Windows Socket 2 Update
y2kvdhcp.exe DUN 1.3/Winsock2 Year 2000 Update
(says DUN 1.4 is newer)
