JScript error
Posted by Nels Hansen on May 14th, 2004

I have just done a clean install of Win95B and, when getting onto the
internet, I am getting the following error message:

An error has occured in the script on this page. The script operation has
been cancelled

In frame: msn_msncomv9

[line: 100] Syntax error

document.all[sznameOfFlashObj.....etc

Will appreciate your help.

Thank you!

Close all browser windows.
Click Start>Settings> Control Panel> Internet Options> Advanced tab:
Check the box for "Disable script debugging"
AND
Un-check the box for "Display a notification about every script error"
Click OK.

Also, see here -
How to disable script and runtime errors in Internet Explorer:
http://www.sureshotsoftware.com/arti...ipterrors.html

Also, if you have MSOffice installed, read this -
Turn off MDM, and see if both errors go away:

MDM is loaded with programs such as Office, and Microsoft Script Debugger.

OFF: How to Turn Off Machine Debug Manager, Mdm.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=321410

OFF2000: Files Whose Name Begins with "fff" Appear in Windows Folder:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=221438
says:

"To work around this issue, remove Mdm.exe to be started as a service on Window 95
and Windows 98 platforms. To do this, remove Mdm.exe from the list under the
following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices

"After all running instances of Mdm.exe are ended and no longer listed within Task
Manager, you can delete any of the TMP files from the root of the Windows directory
without affecting either the Microsoft Script Editor or Mdm.exe. The effect of
taking this step is that remote debugging is disabled, provided that an instance of
Mdm.exe is not started at the time an error is encountered. However, if another
application reinstalls Mdm.exe, or if Mdm.exe /Regserver is run on a computer that
is running Window 95 or Windows 98, Mdm.exe is re-added to the RunServices registry
key "

"NOTE: Running the Detect and Repair feature within Office 2000 causes Mdm.exe to be
re-registered on the system."

"Additionally, if the system has Internet Explorer version 5 or later, Mdm.exe can
still be configured to start at the startup of Window 95 or Windows 98, if the
script debugging feature in Internet Explorer is turned on. You can turn off this
feature within Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. On the
Advanced tab under Setting, make sure that Disable script debugging is selected."

Glen:

Tried your first suggestion, below; I do NOT have an "Internet Options" on
the Control Panel (I only have an "Internet" option which does not have any
boxes referring to script, etc.).

Before I proceed want to let you know that the version of IE is 3.0
(4.70.1158). Could this be part of the problem? Do I need to download a
newer version before I go further?

Thanks.

Oh golly, yes! You are getting script errors because IE3.0 cannot handle the
scripts the web pages are trying to run. You should install the latest version of
IE that will install on Win95...IE5.5 SP1

MS no longer has IE5.5 SP2 available for download, but you can get it
here....beware, it is a very large download (~84MB):
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/5.5_SP2

You may also be able to find it in the hidden folders of an older AOL disc.

When installing or updating IE, you must first close all background apps and disable
the virus scanner and screensaver.

I usually recommmend this procedure:

Reboot.
Open the Temp folder and delete all Temp files:
-Click Start>Run, type %temp% and click OK.
-Press Ctrl+A to select all, then press Delete.

Delete the Temporary Internet Files:
Click Start> Settings> Control Panel> Internet Options> General tab.
Click the Delete Files button, then put a checkmark in the box to Delete all
offline content, and click OK, and OK.

Close all open windows and running apps.
Disable your anti-virus and screensaver.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and End Task on everything except Explorer and Systray.
Install Internet Explorer.

Glen:

Another thank you is in order. Installing IE 5.5 apparently solved the
script problem, too.

Sure appreciate all the trouble you have taken to help me.

Best to you!!!
