i have a partitioned hard drive. I formatted drive D from
within windows 95. when i used drag and drop to move "my
documents" to the d drive, i got a message saying that
long file names were not supported.

How do i get long file names supported on drive d?

Go the web site of your hard drive vendor.
They have software which will do this.
