- Modem problems on win95
- Posted by granjan on August 17th, 2006
My brother has an IBM Aptiva 2176-C66 with Win95 on it. It was given to him
and the modem would not work. I installed an old modem (Conexant MDP3880-W
v90) that I had but it is on COM5 and it will not connect. The original
modem (Mwave 28.8) was on the same card with the sound so I couldn't remove
it. I tried to remove it in device manager but it reinstalls when I reboot.
It is on COM1. How do I reconcile this? Do I change the new modem to COM1?
If so, how do I do it? Any help appreciated.
Janice

There is no need to remove the old modem, unless for some reason COM5 is not
suitable for you.
What process are you using to do the connection, and are you sure you are
using the correct modem (rather than defaulting to the original one, which
you know doesn't work)?

I connect by clicking on the Bellsouth.net icon which brings up the dial-up
screen. I set up the dialup connection myself according to the directions
on the Bellsouth site. I believe it is automatically trying COM1 which is
the old modem which doesn't work. Can this be changed? How?
Thanks for your reply,
Janice

if you look at the dialup connection properties (the one you created) ,
there should be a space that tells which device you are using for this
connection (selectable if more than one device is installed)

First, go into the BIOS setup and make sure that COM1 is disabled. Be sure to
save any changes when exiting. If this doesn't get the old modem/sound card
combo working, remove it, install the new one, then start the computer in Safe
mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly during bootup. Go to "Control Panel",
"System", "Device Manager" and remove the existing modem drivers. Restart
normally and see if Windows detects and installs the new modem. You may
be prompted for your Windows 95 CD. Then, shut down and reinsert the
modem/sound card. If Windows detects and reinstalls the old modem, go
to Device Manager and disable it. You may need to reinstall the sound card
drivers.
