- MS Paint and output resolution
- Posted by Grinder on March 2nd, 2004
My apologies if the answer to my question is readily available on a FAQ
somewhere -- I've not been able to find anything from my searches at google
and google groups.

I recently drew a simple pattern using MS Paint. I set the document size to
be 7" x 9", and by measuring the pixels in the document, have surmised that
it assumes 96 dpi vertically and horizontally.
Everything is fine on the screen, but I have problems with the output. A 2"
x 2" square will become 1 7/8" wide and 1 3/4" tall. The scaling is not so
bad, but I need to preserve aspect ratio more precisely.
Printing the same document with Adobe Photoshop yields a square that is
exactly 2" x 2".

I'm using Windows 2000, but need to insure that this work on Windows 98 and
XP as well. Thanks for your time and consideration.

MS Paint is a simple freebie Windows accessory. I wouldn't count on MS
Paint for anything more than viewing an image, or perhaps saving an image to
a different image format. If you need an application to "preserve the
aspect ratio more precisely," for a drawing that you have created using that
program, then MS Paint will not suit your needs.

Any recommendations for a freeware alternative? I'm helping my nephew with
some homework, and he will need some cheap and lightway to deal with
bitmaps.

Is it strictly a viewer as the name suggests? I'll read up, but perhaps you
can easily say if it has tools equivalent (at least) to MS Paint. ie, Can I
paint?

That's a good link. It looks interesting for my use, but I was hoping for
something a simpler; nonetheless, thank you.

It's more than just a viewer, but it isn't suitable for creating images.

Set your attributes to 2.0" and fill to edges. If you need to then tweak the
attribs up until it prints size you want, remember the sizes for future
reference. My 7 yr old taught me that one and I'll never figure out how she
knows to do it. The higher end print programs have a calibration that
basically does same thing. Maybe it wil help maybe it won't. Walmart also
has programs in the $10-$20 range.

Thanks -- I'm encouraged by your suggestion. I can find Attributes...
alright, but where is the "Fill to Edges" option located. (I'm using
Windows 2000 Microsoft Paint.)
