PCI card identification
Posted by Charlie Bress on April 29th, 2006

This may not be the right place to ask, but if it is not please direct me to
the best place to ask this question.

When a new adapter card is plugged into the system board, the OS recognizes
something is new and then proceeds to ask for driver installation.

I presume that the adapter has imbedded in it a code that can be read that
identifies the part by name or function or both.

Is there a way for a user to see what code is provided and in addition, if
there is a discernable code, is there a place to cross-reference the code by
function, manufacturer, model number or whatever?

The reason for this query is I have installed a card with a video function,
but Device Manager only flags a communications card as not being properly
installed and does not have any recognition of a new video card.

Device identification in W95 is very primitive. The better procedure is to
find the correct driver installation file for the device for yourself and
manually install it. You should be able find an installation file for
almost any device by searching the www with the device identification, such
as manufacturer and model number.

In general the card will usually have a sticker identifying the model.

If you post what it says on the largest chip on the card someone here may be
able to assist in id'ing the drivers that you need.

Windows collects information during enumeration and stores it in the
registry. You can see information it collects (not the code per se) from
the HW in the ENUM key. This link might help:
