PCMCIA Slots usable in W 95/98 Command Line w CSMAPPER & CARDDRV?
Posted by V Harris on February 2nd, 2006

I need to access an IDE PCMCIA hard drive in the Cardbus PCMCIA slots on my
laptop computer (PentiumII, 266MHz) from the Windows 95 or 98 Command Line.
Note that the full version of Windows is not installed on the hard drive,
only the boot files and some tools (like scandisk, etc.).

So I have made the hard drive bootable and put the following lines in the
CONFIG.SYS file:

DEVICE=CSMAPPER.SYS
DEVICE=CARDDRV.EXE /SLOT=2

The computer then starts up and starts Windows. Then it displays the PCMCIA
messages:

Card Services Mapper 2.10 Version 5.01

Microsoft CardDRV for Card Services Version 0.01.05 (02-10-1994)
Copyright (C) . . .

The Device Diver system installed 2 drive(s): D: - E:.

C:\>

So far, so good. Next I insert the IDE PCMCIA hard drive into the slot but
there is no beep or indication on the screen that the card is inserted.

Also, even though the computer reports that is has installed drives D: and
E:, when I try to switch to either D: or E: I get the message:

Not ready reading drive D
Abort, Retry, Fail?

I thought that loading these two PCMCIA drivers in the CONFIG.SYS file would
activate the slots so they would be recognized by the system when a typical
IDE PCMCIA Hard drive is inserted in the slots -- but aparently not.

Can anyone straighten me out about which drivers to use and how to load them
to get the PCMCIA slots able to recognize the PCMCIA hard drive (a 520MB
CallunaCard).

Thanks,

V Harris

Hi, yes I should have stated that I have also tried the same procedure except
that I inserted the IDE PCMCIA HDD before booting up and get the same result.
There is no beep indicating the computer recognizes the HDD, no indication
on the screen that the HDD is recognized, and typing the drive letter (e.g.
d: or e gives the same error message. V Harris

Are the cards partitioned and formatted?

Yes, the cards are partitioned (1 partition of 520MB) and formatted (FAT).
They are "CallunaCard 520MB Type III ATA PCMCIA Card" I use them all the
time in Windows 95/98.

I'm hoping I can use them when booting into Windows 95 DOS Mode by loading
drivers in the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, but the CSMAPPER.SYS and
CARDDRV.EXE drivers don't seem to work. Or, perhaps there are other specific
drivers needed to recognize the ATA drive that also need to be loaded?

Of course, I'm assuming that there actually are Windows 95 drivers that
support ATA PCMCIA drives in DOS mode. Again, any help would be greatly
appreciated!
