- resetting windows config
- Posted by sheila sally on September 4th, 2003
I have a compaq. My windows do not work on any other mode
but safe. But on safe mode nothing can be done. nothing
works at all. some of the errors that I am getting is
Himem.sys is missing, cannot locate device file to run
windows application, cannot locate ms dos mode, the dial
up networking does not work, how would I reset everything
to when the computer and windows were working normally???
I have tried several things to fix the probelem but so far
nothing is working. I have rebooted the computer, I have
tried to restore the registry. When I first log on the
computer goes straight to scandisk, I let the scandisk do
it's job but when the windows screen comes up a bos pops
up and it says "Setting up new hardware" and I have not
added any new hardware. pls help. If you cannot help
then I have no other choice but to purchase another
computer. (which I don't have cash for) Thank you
sheila

In safe mode, you can get into device manager. I'd start by
deleting/disabling anything that has a red x or yellw exclamation next to it
in the device listings. Then, I'd also reset the display settings to
Standard VGA.
While you are in safe more, go into "sysedit" and rem out everything in
config.sys and autoexec.bat. Then you can add things back in 1 at a time
until the system breaks again..
Failing that, format and reinstall?
