I have recently installed the IM program Trillian on my computer
(Pentium 120, Swedish Windows 95 OSR2). The installation seemed to work
just fine. Previous versions of Trillian have worked just fine.
When attempting to run the program now, however, I get these two error
messages:
** 1: Pop up with yellow warning triangle:
Swedish: "Filen TRILLIAN.EXE är länkad till export, SHELL32.DLL:
Shell_NotifyIconW, som inte finns."
English translation: "The file TRILLIAN.EXE is linked to missing export:
SHELL32.DLL: Shell_NotifyIconW."
** 2: Pop up with red circle with white X:
Swedish: "C:[path]\trillian.exe En enhet som är ansluten till datorn
fungerar inte."
English translation: "[path]\trillian.exe A unit connected to the
computer does not work."
The program will not execute.
I've gathered that it has something to do with the Visual Basic code
trying to get something from the Shell dll-file which it cannot find. I
have installed Visual Basic 3, 4, 5, and 6 to no avail.
Does anyone in here know of a solution?
Should I try to extract the Shell32.dll from my Windows CD and put it in
my system folder (overwrite the old one) or will that mess things up
further?
Or will I have to forget the new Trillian and have both MSN Messenger
and Mirabilis ICQ running simultaneously on my slow computer (together
with browser, firewall etc.)?

What version of Trillian did you install? I have Trillian Basic version 0.74 on
OSR2.1 with IE5.5 SP2, and it works here, with the original version of shell32.dll
for Windows 95B. Are you using Trillian Pro 1.0, or 2.0?
The error message indicates that the Trillian executable is expecting a function of
shell32.dll, that your version of the file does not have. Perhaps the version of
Trillian that you have installed does not get along with the Swedish shell32.dll for
OSR2. If it is the Pro version, you should contact Trillian support. Try
reinstalling it, or re-downloading and installing. If the version you installed
does not work, you can always go back to an earlier version of Trillian, that did
work.
Extracting and replacing the shell32.dll file from your CD should not hurt. If your
current version of the file is a different version number, back it up before
replacing it.
