Suddenly super slow CTL-ALT-DEL reveals "mshta Not responding" error, what to do
Posted by George on August 22nd, 2003

Hello,

A few days ago I notice my PC slowed down substantially
and I notice when I do the CTR-ALT-DEL to see what's
running in the background I see, among some other
programs, the "mshta [Not Responding]".

It is so slow that I am seriously consider finally junking
this desktop Dell Workhorse still running on Win95 for
several years.

I have a cable modem and space is very limited, basically
I use it for internet (IE 5.5), email(Outlook Express) and
Office 97.

Is there any hope for me to fix this or is this PC in its
last legs?

I would appreciate any help from the gurus here!

Thank you

George

will "deteriorate" over time and a format and reinstall will get you back
to "like new " condition as long as the hardware itself is OK.

It is an MS file....here are the "usual" errors:

If it is showing up all the time in the Close Program box, I would suspect some malware is exploiting it...see here -
HTA DOWNLOAD exploit advisory:

Update your anti-virus app and then run a full-system virus scan.
