- upgrade to 98 for a HP printer
- Posted by jhs on October 18th, 2003
I need to upgrade Win95 to 98 to take advantage of a new
printer. This is an AST 486SX (pre-installation checklist
for 98 says 486DX, I assume I'm OK) with 80Meg RAM, plenty
of hard disk space. Is this worth it just to take
advantage of a printer (this is an HP printer, all ads for
which never specify Win95)? I'm quite happy with 95
otherwise....

Sorry, an SX is a DX with the math co-porcessor disabled. Your
computer is not suitable for Windows 98.
with 80Meg RAM, plenty
Depends, if the printer connects by parrallel port then the 98
drivers may (repeat _may_) work. If it is a USB printer you will
need Windows 95 specific drivers ( plus a few other things).

Assuming you even get it to install, (which it won't on a 486sx) it would
run so slow as to be almost unusable. Despite what the WIN98 checklist
says, you really need a Pentium 166mmx or better for WIN98 to run well.
I once ran it on a Pentium 90, it ran ok but was too slow for me.
