You can upgrade from W95 to W98 using the retail upgrade or retail full
versions of W98. You cannot upgrade from W95 to XP, although there are some
utilities available with XP that allow you to retain some of your W95
settings when you install XP.

Make sure your hardware has the capacity to handle XP. I would not expect
an older computer, one designed for 95, could handle XP
There is software, free from MS, that will test your system, but it is a
very - very large download (30 megs). So in short,
The practical minimums for Win XP would be a CPU of at least 800 MHz, 256
Megs of RAM, a 10 GB harddrive. If you try it will less than these, you
will be very disappointed with the performance.

Is it possible to upgrade the processor to meet the
needs of XP or do I have to reformat the system and start
from scratch? I have a very dependable Windows 95, 233mhz
system and I really don't like to mess up things that work
fine. I am being forced to upgrade because new software
won't work with my W95 system.

doubtfull that you could upgrade your 233 system much further ...I would not
recommend installing XP on anything less that a 350mhz machine...and even on
that , its sluggish...

Ken,
Many years ago I had a computer with a clock speed of 333 MHz,
operating with Windows 3.1. When I tried to upgrade to Windows 95 I
found that the speed of operation had been considerably reduced. Even
if it is possible, I dread to even think about running a 233MHz
computer with Windows XP.

That should read 33 not 333 MHz.
