- Windows 95 Blue Screen of death

I have an old 1996 HP Pavilion Desktop running Windows 95. A few years ago my
youngest keep turning it off and on until and it froze up one day. It's been
that way for 3 year. Now, I need to recover some data off the HD that has
been safely stored, I hope all these years. This is what happens after I turn
it on. It starts out normal then it says windows wasn’t turned off right.
Then it asked to starts a scandisk and I due. That finishes and it tries to
start but windows doesn't start all I get is the desktop wallpaper with a
photo that is distorted with no icons. I can it F1 and F8 and ctrl/alt/delete
but I do not have any of the original disks and DO NOT and cannot lose any of
the info on the hard drive. The main thing I need is the data and secondary
is getting the computer to work again. Can you please Help!!!

Mount the hard drive (slave it) in another computer and you should be
able to access your files from the working Windows installation in that
other computer.

Ok, sounds good. I have a 2003 xp. How do I hook them up "slave it"?

Pull the hard drive out of the Windows 95 computer and put it in the XP
computer. Your old Windows 95 computer is most probably connected to
one of the IDE controllers, just connect the drive to the same type of
controller connection in your XP computer. There are two connections to
the drive, the power connection and the data cable connection.

Old computer is formated fat 32 and new computers are Win XP Professional
with NTFS file system that Windows 95 will not reconize, and therefore will
not work.

Try starting the computer in Safe mode(tap the F8 key repeatedly during
bootup).

Windows XP can *easily* read a fat32 drive.
(OTOH: A win95 machine cannot read an NTFS drive)
You were given correct advice...simply slave the drive into a newer
machine...that's all there is to it

Windows XP can read and write to FAT32, it will be able to read the
Windows 95 drive. You are not trying to start the new (XP) computer
with the Windows 95 drive, you are mounting the Windows 95 drive to the
Windows XP computer, you will then start Windows XP and access the
Windows 95 drive as a data drive.
If this is giving you problems it may be easier for you to get a USB
drive enclosure and put the Windows 95 drive in the enclosure then plug
the enclosure into the Windows XP computer and access your files that
way. Yank the drive out of the Windows 95 computer and take it with you
to a computer store and tell them that you need a USB enclosure to plug
it into a Windows XP computer, they will give you what you need, cost
about $20 to $30.
